The 2020 Volvo XC90 Builds on Past Success with Exciting New Features

Over the last few years, the Volvo XC90 has established itself as a leading player in the full-size luxury SUV segment. Powerful and efficient powertrains—including the 400-horsepower plug-in hybrid eAWD T8—and luxury-appointed interior designs have made the Volvo XC90 a favorite in the Charlotte, NC area.

Now that the 2020 model year is upon us, it's time to take a look at what changes and tweaks set this year's XC90 apart from its predecessors. 2020 doesn't bring a major re-design, but there are some new features worth talking about. Some of the larger updates we can point to include a new seating configuration and an innovative new braking system that improves overall fuel economy. Let's take a closer look.

What's new in the 2020 Volvo XC90?

Perhaps the biggest update to the 2020 Volvo XC90 comes in the re-configuration of the interior seating arrangement. In years past, the XC90 could be ordered with seating for four, five, or seven. In 2020, the Volvo XC90 adds the industry's only six-seat SUV configuration into the mix. The six seats include the front seats, second-row captain's chairs with plenty of room between them, and two third-row bucket seats. The removal of a middle seat may be a drawback for those with large families, but the improved elbow room may solve some back-row battles before they begin.

The six-seat configuration represents an added option on top of the three possibilities that had already been available, including the super luxurious T8 Excellence, which features two extra-comfortable rear seats.

Another major new feature for the 2020 Volvo XC90 involves the new braking technology. Volvo has added a kinetic energy recovery braking system, which reduces fuel consumption by as much as 15% by recovering energy under braking.

The Sensus infotainment system also gets a modest upgrade from its already-high bar, now featuring standard Android Auto™ integration as well as a built-in Spotify app. The 2020 Volvo XC90 also gets a new available seating material—Tailored Wool Blend upholstery. This advanced fabric is made with 70 percent recycled polyester, providing a comfortable and sustainable option in interior design.

How safe is the Volvo XC90?

Volvo has been building vehicles with some of the most innovative safety technology in the industry for years. From the frame to the driver alerts to active steering and braking technology, the 2020 XC90 is designed from the ground up to keep you and your passengers safer than ever.

The safety features of the new XC90 begin with the frame. Ultra high-strength boron steel constitutes a powerful safety cell for your XC90's occupants, and innovative safety belt technology directs the appropriate amount of tension to the belts to provide safety without applying excessive pressure on the passengers.

City Safety is Volvo's suite of driver-assist safety features that monitor the road for objects, pedestrians, and animals, day or night. City Safety issues alerts to the driver, and in some cases can provide help with steering and automatically engage the brakes. Some of the advanced City Safety features available on the XC90 include:

  • Run-off Road Protection
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Road Sign Information
  • Oncoming Lane Mitigation
